Aging gracefully

The aging process is different for every one depending on their lifestyle and genetics. Dr. Byrne can make sure that the face that you see reflected back at you in the mirror is one that makes you happy. “Gravity, sun exposure, genetics and smoking can all affect the way that the face ages and shifts. Through procedures such as a facelift, injections of fillers and facial implants, we can adjust the proportions and volume of the face in such a way that makes you look refreshed and rejuvenated,” Dr. Byrne says. “This is an exciting time for cosmetic procedures because no longer is one solution the only solution like it was 20 to 30 years ago; we can customize a full range of options for the individual.” As a specialist devoted exclusively to plastic surgery of the face, Dr. Byrne can focus on the minute details of the expressive components of features and ensure that the chosen treatments for you will be done with the utmost quality care.

No longer happy with her reflection in the mirror, this patient consulted with Dr. Byrne. “I toyed with the idea of surgery but was nervous. After meeting Dr. Byrne and his staff, all my fears vanished and I felt like I was part of a family,” says the patient. “The outcome was better than I dreamed. Now I feel like the old me.”

About my practice:

How do you educate the public?

I am responsible for teaching other surgeons, and I do this through Johns Hopkins, and the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. It is a part of my job that I really love. In fact this joy of teaching extends to my patients—I believe that they really appreciate being as educated as possible about their options. I try to invest the time to provide for each patient reliable information that will help them make great decisions.

About me:

What is your favorite part of your job?

I have spent over a decade now in practice on a quest to perfect my skills and achieve the best possible outcomes. I love the challenge of each patient’s surgery. Each face is unique and requires detailed analysis and an ideal plan. The thrill is in deciding on the right plan (for that face) and seeing how well you can execute.

What educational titles do you hold?

I am a full-time faculty member and Associate Professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. I am the Director of the Division of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in the Department of Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery. Our department has been ranked No.1 in the country by US News and World Report for the past 14 years. I hold faculty appointments at Hopkins in head and neck surgery and dermatology.

What alternative occupation would you choose?
I would teach and coach soccer as well as track.

I would teach and coach soccer as well as track.

What's something you are never without?
My iPod. I just love music.
What are your hobbies?
I have so many, but there will be time for them later. My hobbies now revolve around my amazing wife and three remarkable young kids. My free time is theirs and is priceless.
How would patients describe you?
Patient, humble, perfectionist, warm, engaging and raised right.

EYELIFT

If I am considering an eyelift, how far in advance should I have the procedure done before a special event?

Ideally at least one month. Any sooner and you run the risk of having visible bruising or swelling.

CHEMICAL PEELS

When would I need a chemical peel?

Chemical peels work much like a laser—they improve the quality of the skin. They can be very superficial, or performed in a way to produce a deep peel. The lighter peels can be done without any significant redness nor obvious peeling. The deepest peels require time off from social activities, as the skin will be very raw and red for a while. In general, the deeper peels produce better results, but they do require more downtime and have greater risks. The risks include scarring and changes in the skins pigmentation.

What noninvasive techniques do you recommend for facial rejuvenation?

Peels and injectables. There are so many great products and techniques available now. The skin quality and volume loss changes associated with aging can be effectively treated without surgery.

LASERS

Do you ever recommend laser treatments as an adjunct to surgery?

Absolutely. We feel that there are three categories of change that aging produces in the face. One is sagging skin and soft tissue. Cosmetic surgery can correct this. The second is volume loss—our faces lose fat as we age. So we restore volume in the face with injections, and this produces a more youthful appearance. The third category is skin quality changes—wrinkles and sun spots appear, largely related to lifetime sun exposure. Lasers can help these changes quite a bit, leading to smoother skin texture and tone.

FACELIFT

What facial surgeries can be done endoscopically?

The endoscopic browlift is a well established procedure that can produce beautiful and long lasting results. The incisions are small and well hidden in the hair. The endoscope is also useful for mid-facelifts, which rejuvenate the areas under the eyes and around the mouth.

What's the best way to ensure a natural-looking facelift?

Choose a great surgeon! Honestly that is the best way—it is such an artistic procedure. Ideally you will find someone who specializes in the face, has a lot of experience and yet is also comfortable with the most contemporary techniques.

Will I eventually need another facelift or can it be a one-time procedure?

It certainly can last a long time. We do continue to age, unfortunately. Typically, it is a decade or more before the aging reaches a point that someone wants another facelift.

How does the quality of skin play a role in facelift results?

Like most surgeries, there is tremendous variation between patients in terms of the results. A patient who is lean, with good bone structure, and who has healthy skin with minimal sun damage will have a very different outcome than someone with extensive sun damage, or excess fat, etc. It is best to take great care of your skin as much as possible, and the outcome of a facelift is one reason!

What are the benefits of endoscopic surgery?

Endoscopic procedures allow for much smaller incisions, less tissue dissection, and quicker healing.

Does a browlift affect more than my eyebrows? How so?

Absolutely. For many, a great effect of the browlift is to open the frame of the eyes. The browlift can treat much of the excess eyelid skin near the corners of the eye. The result can be eyes that look larger and more beautiful.
