Putting the "you" in youthful

Dr. Rand is particularly passionate about dermatology due to its diversity. As a dermatologist I'm privileged to treat a wide array of symptoms and people. It doesn't matter if you're a lawyer in a courtroom, an actress on television or a costume designer on the set of a movie everyone wants and deserves to look as good as they can. After all, let's face it, looks aren't everything, but they sure are important no matter who you are or what you do, says Dr. Rand, who treats everything from medical dermatologic concerns to those of a more cosmetic nature. I'm lucky; I see babies, parents, grandparents even great-grandparents. No two patients are the same, and neither are any two recommendations. Every patient is unique and is treated as such. For Dr. Rand, the goal isn't to look as young as possible, but rather as beautiful as possible for one's age and individual sense of style. You're welcome to contact our office to ask about our spring specials, says Dr. Rand.

Dermbasics®

For those looking to go “back to basics,” improving the integrity of their skin sans fragrances and oil-based ingredients, Dr. Rand’s Dermbasics line truly is the answer. With 12 products, the line has been a must-have for those looking to really make a statement with their skin. Realistic with her patients, Dr. Rand, however, recognizes that products don’t ever take the place of procedures. “Patients reap the most benefits when they combine a skin regimen with in-office treatments,” Dr. Rand says.

Philosophy

A true beauty guru, Harvard-trained Dr. Rhonda E. Rand is just as likely to recommend patients get a hair cut to better frame their face as she is to suggest Dysport®—a product she was a principal investigator for in FDA clinical trials. “Beauty involves more than just the skin, itself. I look at the big, aesthetic picture to give my patients the benefit of a comprehensive approach. Above all else, I want my patients to look natural, but better.”

About my practice:

What do you like most about your job?

I love hearing patients say, “Thanks, Dr. Rand. I feel better about my appearance.” This challenge of improving what we present to the world is what drives me. And in light of the technologies that have come to the forefront over the last 20 years, it’s remarkable what we have to offer our patients.

What new treatments are you excited to offer patients?

CoolSculpting by Zeltiq and Exilis are very exciting noninvasive treatments. Zeltiq uses cold, cryolipolysis technology to freeze fat cells. After treatment, the fat is naturally flushed from your body for a slimmer silhouette in three months. Exilis uses radio frequency to produce a thermal effect, stimulating collagen and tightening the face, neck and body.  These two treatments are the newest addition to our family of body-sculpting devices.

What innovation do you think has taken the field to new heights?

The Fraxel® laser is a personal favorite. It’s great for complete resurfacing and can remove years off of your appearance with minimal downtime. It also smooths, tightens and brightens the skin. I’m so enthusiastic about the results it delivers.

Why do you choose not to delegate your injectable procedures?

Having been in practice for more than 20 years, I have come to really take pride in my work as an artist. I don’t believe in shuffling patients off to another member of my team. They’re here to see me, which is why I want to personally care for them.

How do you tailor treatments?

No two patients are the same, and neither are any two recommendations. Every patient is unique and is treated as such. The goal isn’t to look as young as possible, but rather as beautiful as possible for one’s age and individual sense of style.

About me:

In what ways do you give back?

I have been an assisting clinical professor of dermatology at UCLA, where I teach cosmetic dermatology to residents. I also perform pro bono work for the Venice Family Clinic.

What attracted you to dermatology?

I began college as an art major but fell in love with science on the way. A career in dermatology combined my aesthetic talents and love of science.

How do you spend your free time?

I’m a mother of three teenagers, so that takes up a good portion of my time. I also enjoy hiking, skiing and traveling.

ACNE TREATMENTS

What do you recommend to treat old acne scars?

There are a lot different treatments and it often depends on the type of scar. Whether it’s a pitted scar or a sloping scar. We can use fillers to lift up scars. We can use Fraxel to take down the scars. We can do microdermabrasion a few times if the scars are very small. If the scar is very large, we may just take it out surgically and put stitches in. Chemical peels can also help. You really have to look at the patient in consultation and determine the type of scarring and the skin tone to determine the right treatment, which may be a little of everything.

What are the pros of fractional laser resurfacing?

It’s hard to group the words “fractional laser resurfacing.” The laser I use Fraxel re:pair, is a CO2 laser that means it’s an ablative laser, and I love it. It’s for sun damage and wrinkles and it resurfaces the skin, but with the fractionated technology the skin heals much faster than it did with the old CO2 lasers.

Which laser treatments are best for sun damage?

For my patients who have really bad upper lip wrinkles, I sometimes pull out the old CO2 laser, but in general I use the Fraxel.

VEIN TREATMENTS

After sclerotherapy do I have to stay out of the sun?

You should wear support hose for a week and if the veins are bigger, then maybe even longer (about two weeks). For most of the little spider veins, a week is fine. I tell my patients to sleep with them the first night and after that, they need to wear them all day. You can work out with the compression stockings on and do normal activity. Can you lay in the sun? No, because you have your stockings on.

Are spider veins on the leg best treated with a laser or injections?

Sclerotherapy is still the best. I do have a laser that I use for tiny red ones, but for regular spider veins that are blue or green or dark red I get the best results with sclerotherapy injections.

When do veins get so bad that they can’t be treated with sclerotherapy and need to be treated surgically?

If they have really bad varicose veins, then they may need to have those veins taken out surgically. Come into the dermatologist and get a consultation. That way we can take a look and figure out what the right treatment is.

How can I get rid of neck wrinkles?

There are so many great things out now for necks. We have a machine called Exilis, which is radio frequency, and we’re getting great results with it. It tightens up the neck and the skin laxity that people see. It’s a great option that is noninvasive. We typically do about four treatments. We can also use Fraxel re:pair, which has a little bit of downtime, to treat sun damage on top of that.
