Sculpting a better shape

Techniques for rejuvenating the face are constantly evolving. “In addition to volume in the mid-face, we now pay closer attention to lateral volume,” Dr. Fitzgerald says. “By treating this patient with Sculptra® Aesthetic, off label, in the temples and cheeks, we were able to restore a more youthful facial shape.”

Noninvasive innovations

In years past, turning back the clock meant going under the knife. “Today, we have many options,” says Dr. Fitzgerald. “The current understanding that volume loss contributes much to the appearance of the face as we age, in combination with the advent of new procedures and techniques, has dramatically increased the ability to address these changes outside of the operating room.” Volume replacement, although not a substitute for surgery, may delay or enhance cosmetic surgical procedures. Likewise, as understanding about the location of volume loss and optimal targets for replacement improves, so do our results. “Looking younger has a lot to do with how light and shadow play off your facial features, as well as the shape and proportions of your face.” Dr. Fitzgerald is a member of the Botox® Cosmetic National Education Faculty and Bioform Medical Education Faculty, and is a national and international trainer for Sculptra® Aesthetic. “It’s a very exciting time in our field, and I feel very lucky,” she says.

Philosophy

Dr. Rebecca Fitzgerald focuses her anti-aging approach on looking good for your age-refreshed, relaxed and, above all, natural. "Even the most critical eye should think you were just born lucky," she says."

About my practice:

How do you keep up with new ideas and techniques?
I am very academically active I teach, publish in peer-reviewed medical journals and textbooks, and attend/contribute to numerous professional meetings.
What can patients do to prevent wrinkles?
The antidote to premature aging is multi- pronged sun protection, diet, adequate rest and exercise.
How do you relate to patients?
As a person in my early 50s, I under- stand my clients' concerns about aging. I'm very candid about what I've had done and it helps affirm that you can look refreshed without looking 'done.' I've learned that it's best to correct a little bit all along rather than waiting for substantial changes that make correction more costly and extensive.

About me:

What did you do before establishing your private practice?
I spearheaded a clinic at a large HMO where I incorporated the use of Sculptra to treat an HIV-related condition called facial lipoatrophy.
What aspect of your job do you like the most?
I love the blend of art and science, and the chance to interact with patients of all ages.
How is your job rewarding?
In this profession you can do little things that impact a patient's appearance and self-confidence. Facilitating positive changes for my patients is very gratifying.
What is your favorite part of your job?

I like seeing how small changes can make a big difference in people's lives.
